Decorating For Fall in 3 Easy Steps
By Kelly M Moran

Autumn is a special time of year filled with great traditions and activities...festivals, the crunch of fallen leaves under our feet, tailgating, selecting the perfect pumpkin for carving, trick-or-treating and the smell of cider simmering on the stove. This year let's celebrate the fall season by transforming our homes from a summer oasis to an autumnal haven.

Here's how to take any space from "summer splash" to "autumn warmth" in three easy steps using color, texture and lighting .

Color . Embrace the changing colors of the leaves by adding rich golds, deep pumpkins and toasted reds to your decor. To create a balanced and cohesive look, use the accent color in a space or room at least three times.

  • Place a fall-colored creamic or clay pot of fresh flowers on a side table next to a chair. Sunflowers are a perfect choice because of their deep chocolate brown centers and golden petals. Add stems of fall berries for a new look and an extra burst of color.
  • Include antique bronze trays, vases, bowls or other items in place of silver items for a softer, warmer result.
  • Update a space quickly and simply with throw pillows. To determine what color pillow will boost the fall look and coordinate with existing furnishings, examine upholstery, artwork and accessories with a fresh eye to unearth a new accent color.
  • Texture . Our next step is to replace smooth, shiny finishes that remind us of the glass-like water of a lake on a summer's eve with the rough-hewn feeling of fall.
  • Bring out the soft, tassled throw that seems too "comfy" for the hot summer months. Drape it over a chair, sofa or bed to add visual warmth and layering. (It is like putting on a favorite sweater on a chilly day...and, the throw may come in handy on a cool night!)
  • Fill an elongated bowl or tray with pine cones or seasonal vegetables (real or faux will work). Choose medium-sized items and line them up, rather than creating a mound, for a sophisticated yet simple look.
  • Position a large tray under a table display to unify the accessories and add visual depth to your vignette. Consider alternative types of trays to create the desired look. For example, a leather or metal tray will achieve a different effect than a wooden or basket-style tray.
  • Lighting . After color and texture have been fine-tuned, it's time to light it up and show it off with fall flair.
  • Replace ivory candles with golden or amber colored candles; they add warmth with their color and produce a lovely glow when lit. Nestle them inside a hurricane on a bed of uncooked split peas or red beans to achieve an organic effect. If preferred, select candles that are scented with spiced apple or cinnamon to captivate the sense of smell and fill the room with a delicious aroma.
  • Swap off-white lamp shades with antiqued or tan shades that cast warm, yellow pools of light. The result will be soft, relaxing and romantic - similar to the glow of a camp fire.
  • To heighten a lamp that is too short, place several books underneath the lamp to elevate it to the proper hieght. (Remember to use fall colored books!) Or, to achieve a similar effect, exchange the table lamp for a floor lamp which will also provide more space on the table for a beautiful fall display.

Some people say that "the devil is in the details." When it comes to decorating our homes "the delight is in the details"...especially when it comes to accessorizing our homes for the fall season. After making a few of the suggested changes, you may find yourself wanting to linger in your new "autumnal haven"... sipping a cup of tea or apple cider, spending time with friends or family, or just recalling the happy memories of fall traditions and activities gone by. Enjoy!
